Cobber seems to be one of the hotest and most dry places that I have visited in Australia so far – although I think the temperture at the moment is only just over 40oc. It is a huge opal mining area and the town is full of shops selling them. Around the town there are 100’s if not 1,000’s of working and disused mines. As a result of the heat and mining equipment most of the houses and shops are underground where it is nice and cool. The hostel we are staying in at the moment is underground and is one of the most pleasent I have stayed in, apart from the noise which does seem to carry. Today we visited a opal cutting shop, the famous Old Timers Mine and a Church (also underground). Its is a really interesting place and you can see why Mad Max III and Pitch Black were filmed here. Oh also forgot the Big Winch which is just another one of the Big things that you tend to see around the country. This is really the last place on my list to visit in central Australia and I will be heading back to Melbourne via Adeliade next, although I might stay in Adelaide until after the commonwealth games have finished.
